I really have found over my career that I very easily put people at ease, and that I’m far more approachable and open than people expect… I find it very easy for people to come and confide with me at all levels, whether it be the small businessmen or the CEO of a company.

Jane joined the Corporate Department of Trott & Duncan in May 2014 as a Senior Corporate Attorney. She has practiced corporate law in Bermuda since 2008, having relocated from the UK where she qualified as a solicitor in 1999.

Jane advises local and international clients, from both the public and private sectors, on a broad range of corporate law matters including company and business start-ups, share/business acquisitions and disposals, joint ventures/shareholders agreements, commercial contracts and advising companies and directors on corporate governance issues.

Jane also has extensive experience in the areas of banking and asset finance, aviation and shipping finance/registration and corporate structuring/restructuring and has acted for a wide range of clients including domestic and international banks, airlines and aircraft manufacturers.
Jane also advises clients in the regulated sectors of investment funds, insurance and Fintech in relation to requirements for establishment, licensing and ongoing compliance obligations and currently serves on the Legal Focus Group of the Bermuda Business Development Agency Committee.

Jane’s interest in practising corporate law stemmed primarily from her degree (BA Business Studies) where she studied accountancy, law, economics and marketing. This was bolstered by her time prior to, during and post her degree working in commercial insurance where she trained as a commercial and engineering underwriter and then practised as a commercial insurance broker prior to studying for her law finals. She has always had a strong business acumen and ability to recognise the importance of applying commerciality to the legal context and wanted to help companies and businesses find solutions to issues that faced them.

Outside the office Jane is an AFAA-certified group fitness instructor and an AEA certified aquatics fitness professional. She is also a licensed Zumba instructor and currently teaches Zumba and Aqua Zumba classes. Jane has always had an interest in music since a young age and is an accomplished brass brayer having studied tenor horn, French horn and trumpet. Jane loves to travel when the opportunity arises.

What Jane thinks

What tends to happen with some law firms is that clients get pushed from pillar to post. This is not the case at Trott & Duncan at all. Our aim is to ensure that each client receives personal attention with a responsive and efficient service, which is sensitive to their commercial and practice needs. The fact they know that they’re going to come back to the same person and they’re going to get a friendly service, which is efficient and actually drills down to their specific needs.

I really have found over my career that I very easily put people at ease, and that I’m far more approachable and open than people expect, because they have a preconceived idea of what a corporate lawyer is, which makes certain clients slightly hesitant in coming to see me. They imagine corporate lawyers to be very business-like and intimidating. I find it very easy for people to come and confide with me at all levels, whether it be the small businessmen or the CEO of a company.
